Room Air Conditioners
  • Ensure proper sealing of doors and windows.
  • Set thermostat at 25ºC for optimum cooling at the least cost therefore, for each degree of more cooling will result in more energy use by 3 – 5%.
  • Clean AC filter every month. A dirty air filter reduces airflow thereby damaging the unit. Moreover clean filters use less energy.
  • Operate the ceiling fan in conjunction with window AC to spread the cool air more effectively throughout the room and operate the AC at higher temperature thus saving energy.
  • Use film / tinted glass on windows.
  • Plant trees or shrubs to shade air conditioning units but not to block the airflow. A unit operating in the shade uses 10–15% less electricity than the same one operating in the sun.
  • A roof garden can reduce the load on air conditioner.
  • Prefer air conditioners having automatic temperature cut off. A good air conditioner will cool a room in about 30 minutes. So use the timer accordingly.
  • Set your thermostat as high as comfortably possible in the summer. The less difference between the indoor and outdoor temperatures, the lower will be energy consumption.
  • Leave enough space between your air conditioner and the walls to allow better air circulation.
  • Don’t place lamps or TV sets near your AC thermostat. The thermostat senses heat from these appliances and runs for longer period than necessary.
