Refrigerator
  • Don’t open door frequently.
  • Set thermostat in medium cooling position.
  • Keep adequate space from wall. Refrigerator motors and compressors generate heat and require continuous airflow around it. If the heat can’t escape the refrigerator cooling system will work harder thereby using more energy.
  • Don’t overload the refrigerator. However if it is full be sure to allow adequate air circulation inside.
  • Defrost your refrigerator regularly. For manual defrost refrigerator, accumulation of ice reduces the cooling power by acting as unwanted insulation, hence defrost freezer compartment regularly for a manual defrost refrigerator.
  • Refrigerator should be kept away from all sources of heat e.g. direct sunlight, oven, cooking range etc.
  • Make sure your refrigerator’s rubber door seals are airtight.
  • Don’t leave the fridge door open for longer than necessary, as cold air will escape. Think what you need before opening the fridge door. This will reduce the amount of time the door remains open. Cover liquids and wrap foods release moisture and make the compressor work harder.
  • Avoid putting hot or warm food straight into the refrigerator.
  • Clean the refrigerators condenser coils regularly for air circulation because if the dust gathers on the coil, the motor works harder and uses more electricity.
